The November 2016 Parliamentary Elections are a unique opportunity to vote for those who represent us in Parliament.

Change cannot happen without our involvement in the democratic process.

The outcome of an election, when based on a significant number of voter turnout, can be very different from that achieved with low turnout. Moreover, the diaspora comprises millions of Romanians, it is important to have quality representation in the Romanian Parliament!

Civic involvement and participation is very normal in the Netherlands, that's why we want our message to reach as many Romanians living in the Netherlands as possible, and even more, by example, our personal network in Romania and elsewhere in the world.

Romania is our country of soul and we care about the way it is run and administered, that is why it is good to know that:

  • in these parliamentary elections, only the following people vote at polling stations in the Netherlands Romanian citizens who have domicile or residence in the Netherlands (not tourists and not those temporarily here)
  • the entire Diaspora is part of the 43rd College of Electors where (through our vote) we elect 4 deputies and 2 senators who will represent us in the Romanian Parliament.

Required documents

  1. Valid passport or identity card (Romania)
  2. Proof of residence or domicile in the Netherlands (can be one of them):
  • Romanian passport with mention of residence in the Netherlands
  • extract from the town hall proving residence in the Netherlands
  • valid residence permit (Netherlands)
  • international extract of the registration of persons in the population register

Any other proof is not accepted (including Dutch driving licence)!

Where you can vote

  • At polling stations at the Hague Embassy on Election Day
  • By correspondence (requires following the process "Registration"); you can send your vote by post (postage already included) at least 10 days before the election date
  • At a polling station close to home, if there are at least 100 people registered for this option (requires following the process "Registration" and depends on the number of registrants). The polling station will only be open for those registered with this option!

"Registration" in the Electoral Register

(valid for this parliamentary election only)

  • The following forms must be sent by post or hand-delivered in an envelope to the Embassy of Romania in The Hague (see website mae.ro), copies of your passport/ID card and proof of residence in the Netherlands;
  • The data submitted will be strictly protected by law and will only be used for the Electoral Register for this election;
  • After registration you will receive your ballot at home (one month before the election) or if you opt for a polling station, you will be assigned to a polling station closer to your home (depending on the required minimum of 100 registrants).

Details, explanations of the process and FAQs can be found at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
