Elections for the House of Representatives/ Representatives - 17 March 2021 (Tweedekamer Verkiezingen 17 maart 2021)

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the upcoming parliamentary elections will be different from the usual ones in the Netherlands. The Dutch government considers it important that the elections on 17 March 2021 take place, but in a different form.

Normally there is only one election day on which voters can vote. In this year's elections for the House of Representatives/Deputy you can vote on one of the following three days: Monday 15, Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 March between 7.30 and 21.00.

A total of 11,000 polling stations will be available.

Voters belonging to an at-risk group, those over 70 in particular, can vote one or two days earlier in all municipalities, and postal voting is also possible for them.

You can find out more details by watching the recording of the event: Unwrapping the Dutch political landscape and the election process. Event supported by ROMPRO together with our guests Erik Boog, burgemeester van de Gemeente Diemen and freelance journalist and writer Stefan Popa.

In order to vote you must:

  • you hold Dutch citizenship (by 1 February 2021)
  • be at least 18 years old by Wednesday 17 March 2021
  • not to be disqualified from voting
  • be registered at the town hall where you vote (by 1 February 2021)

How to identify yourself:

Permitted identity documents are:

  • Dutch identity card
  • Dutch residence document

Voters can vote with an expired ID. They can use this document if it has been invalid for no more than five years from 17 March 2021. Therefore, the ID document must indicate the validity period until 18 March 2016 or later.

When do you receive your Voting Permit/Stempas?

You will receive your voting permit at your home address no later than 14 days before the election. You will receive the list of candidates/Stemwijzer at home at least 4 days before the election. It is also displayed in the polling station/Stembureau and can be consulted on the spot.

  • Stempas for 70+ Postal votes for people over 70

Voters over 70 can vote by post. This does not require them to go to a polling station to vote, but is of course allowed if they do not wish to vote by post.

Another option is by power of attorney. The voter who votes for you can take a maximum of three proxies. He/she must submit this proxy at the same time as his/her vote.

There are two types of power of attorney/Volmacht

  1. private power of attorney (onderhandse volmacht/ handwritten)
  2. written proof of authorisation (schriftelijke volmachtbewijs)

How to complete:

  1. Onderhandse volmacht
  • Both signatures
  • Both identity documents must not have expired more than 5 years ago (expiry date 18 March 2016 or later).

2- schriftelijke volmachtbewijs/Procura written Schriftelijk bewijs

A digital application is submitted to the town hall using a DigiD, and both the proxy and the proxy holder must log in to the town hall with DigiD

A written power of attorney does not require the attorney-in-fact to be registered in the same locality as the attorney-in-fact.

3-Voter card/ Kiezerspas

This voter card allows you to vote in another locality. An application is submitted digitally to the town hall where the voter is registered on 1 February 2021.

Stemwijzer/Candidate list

You will receive the list of candidates/Stemwijzer at home at least 4 days before the elections. This Stemwijzer is also displayed in the Polling Station/Stembureau and can be consulted on the spot.
