Romanian language and culture workshop

Welcome back after a well-deserved holiday!

This Saturday's lesson was on "Professions". We started with a short dialogue about what the children would like to be when they grow up. We will certainly have no shortage of teachers, doctors, policemen, pilots and firemen. Using picture cards, we named other professions and their characteristics: we learned that the tailor makes clothes, the farmer takes care of the farm and animals, the carpenter makes furniture, the mechanic repairs cars, the fireman saves lives, the dentist makes sure our teeth are healthy, and the film director makes movies.

Starting from cinema, director, film, actor, we watched three forshpans of the films "Veronica", "Inside out" and "The Twopenny Bag". The children were asked to recognise the films and some of the characters. A successful exercise! We also hummed an extract from the song "Veronica". We had a good belly laugh, discussing the well-known animated film "The Angry Mole", in which a mole goes in search of the one who "pooped" on her head. The film was screened at the SPOTLIGHT Romanian Film Festival on 28 October. Under the shower of giggles and through mime, we also learned what we call animal excrement in Romanian: "baliga" is made by horses, cows, pigs; responsible for "găinaț" are birds; and those olive pits are called "căcăreze" and are made by goats, sheep and rabbits.

The star letter of the day was "F". After a little confusion between the letter "v" and the Dutch "f" sound, I understood - I hope, and remembered - that in Romanian, "f" is simply written and read "f", that we find it in words like "film", "son", "daughter", "fear", "bean". The little ones wrote on the board and competed with examples of words with this letter.

We ended the lesson like artists, creating an acorn using the folding technique, which the children took home.Next Saturday we look forward to another lesson, when we will continue with the theme of crafts. We don't know what crafts you have, but they are certainly interesting and we would love to learn more about them. If you would like to tell us about what you do or a particular hobby, please write to us. We'd be happy to give you ten minutes of our lesson.

Play and personal development

Today we focused again on words, their meanings and the situations in which we use them, because learning new words and enriching our vocabulary is always fun and interesting.

We started by practicing the Romanian alphabet. Then, we brought the words to children's attention through classic Romanian games, which we used to play with the same pleasure and enthusiasm often well into our teenage years.

The children found FAZAN very interesting and fun. We hope they will remember the rules next time we play again and have a chance to practise the new knowledge they have learned. From simple words we have moved on to broader notions of geography through TOMAPANT, learning new names of countries, cities, mountains, waters and even plants and animals. From the top of the Carpathian Mountains we went down to the Australian desert, home to one of the strangest animals, the platypus, which we had the opportunity to talk about a little and thus learn how strange nature sometimes is. On this occasion, we revisited some older notions about Evolution that we have discussed in past lessons.

But we still have a lot to explore together. I'm glad we don't lack the joy of discovery!

Until next time: all the best and good luck in everything!
